Description
This listing is for an internal battery for the MONSTER TRUCK RC Zip Zaps by Radio Shack, it is a replacement for GP 2.4 volt12AAAM2B6 -
THIS BATTERY REQUIRES SOLDERING TO THE CHASSIS or THE OLD BATTERY LEADS.
Includes:Battery and leads as shown in first pic.
.
Description:
If your Monster Truck Zip Zap micro RC no longer charges or syncs with the controller, or your ZipZaps have only a short run time. Your problem may be that the internal battery is aged and does not charge or holds a poor charge.
With this new internal battery it could be as good as new.
Pic. 2 (not included) shows what the interior of your Zip Zap should look like to be compatible with this battery - ie please don't confuse it with the other chassis versions of Zip Zaps.
Installation Instructions:
1) Turn the switch on the back of the chassis to "OFF"
2) Remove the 2 screws circled in red as shown in pic. 2 - The best size I have found is Phillips 000, about the same size used for eyeglass repair.
3) Carefully pivot and slide the clear plastic PCB board cover forward to revel the PCB board. Now remove the screw circled in red as shown in pic. 3. You can now move the PCB to reveal the old battery.
SOLDERING
4 A) If you have a professional grade soldering iron (50-60 Watt or so - we used a Weller PES51), and a mid or large sized bezel or double bezel solder tip shown in pic. 4 as 'A'. You can desolder the old battery leads from the chassis as shown in pic. 5. - Solder and desolder time should be about 1 second only (long solder contact times will cause the plastic chassis to MELT !). Solder tips are NOT included with this listing and are shown only for demonstration. Obviously, make the solder connection from red to red and black to black. We recommend pre-tinning the leads.
Technicians Note:
The replacement battery is slightly larger (about 1mm) than the original battery but will fit in the originals place.
Run the wires to the back of the chassis so the wires don't interfere the steering mechanism.
After installation run times after charging should be 7-10 minutes.
If the Zip Zaps have not been used in some time you will also need to clean the bottom contacts of the car chassis or controller chassis with isopropyl alcohol.
Make sure you have 4 x "AAA" batteries for the controller and turn the car chassis to "ON"
Connect the chassis to the controller and the controller status light should turn red for about 1 minute while it charges, after charging it should turn green.
If you get the amber (yellow) trouble light double check the connections between the battery and chassis, or the connection between the chassis and controller.
Nominal voltage should be 2.4 volts, after charging - saturation voltage will be between 2.7 - 2.8 volts.
This item is also for sale at our retail location and may be removed at any time.
FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
Q.1. Is it hard to install this battery ? I've never installed an internal battery before.
A.1. This battery installation requires soldering. It should only be attempted by people with mid to high levels of experience or you may accidentally melt your chassis.
Q.2 Do I need any special tools ?
A.2.You will need a small Phillips screw driver (ideally 000 Phillips), plus a soldering iron and possibly electrical tape or shrink wrap. We have included 2 options for install in the instructions depending on your grade of soldering iron and the soldering tips you have.
Q.3. How does it compare to the original battery ?
A.3. It is the same chemistry (Nimh) as the original GP brand battery but is slightly larger but fits into the original space. Because it is slightly larger than the original it has more energy and and has a longer run time (7-10 minutes total) than the original. We also upgraded the wire leads to stranded 22 AWG.
